Monday 1st July to Friday 12th July
As a student of Crestwood Community School, Eastleigh, I was set the task of finding and partaking in two weeks worth of work experience, which led me to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA).
Starting on the 1st of July (which just so happened to be the Charity’s 12th birthday) and ending on the 12th of July, it was an opportunity for me to learn about the core functions of a workplace, to learn new skills, and to be able to apply different lessons taught to me in the office.
My first day was a roller coaster of emotions. I started out with an overwhelming feeling of angst as I was unsure what to expect and whether I would be able to interact with everyone in the office.
Curious about what I’d get up to, I was in nervous anticipation. The last thing I wanted, was to be bored doing something I didn’t enjoy. However, as soon as I had met the team and sat down at my desk, those worries seemed a million miles away. Everyone was exceptionally welcoming and made me feel like part of the team. I was kept very busy learning everything I would need to know for my time spent here.
As I started getting to know everyone, I could feel some confidence seeping back into me and I began to relax. The whole team at the office are so friendly and generally made my entire experience here far more enjoyable. So much so that not arriving here on Monday morning will be strange as I will miss everyone I’ve got to know.
The entire experience has been one I’ve greatly enjoyed, and I wouldn’t change my choice for anything. What’s more, I’ve had the most amazing opportunity to learn loads of new skills which will help me progress throughout my life, further education and employment.
I’ve also been able to grow in confidence by getting to know new people and work alongside them in a working environment.
Lastly, I feel as though this experience has helped to shape me as a young person and assisted me into maturing and realising what the world of work is like. And for that, I can only thank the amazing team of people at HIOWAA.
